The plot follows two interconnected timelines. In the Berlin of the 90s a group of young hackers and art students had founded ART + COM, a collaboration between artists and computer scientists to create cutting-edge art halfway between computer programming and digital art. In 1991 they had developed a planetary browser, which in 1993 was used by Joachim Sauter to obtain funding from Deutsche Telekom to successfully start the development of Terravision. In the film the beginnings of ART + COM were left out and many of the real people and stakeholders were merged into a smaller cast with the fictional Carsten Schlüter as the lead artist and Juri Müller as the lead programmer.The second timeline revolves around the 2014 patent infringement dispute against Google, according to which Terravision was used to develop Google Earth. The fictional character Brian Anderson refers to Brian McClendon and Michael T. Jones, who founded Keyhole Inc, a company bought by Google in 2004, to develop a planetary browser.
