The story is set in the fictional town of Skylin, Texas; each episode focuses on the same day with the alternation of three different years, 1993, 1994 and 1995. The series follows two teenagers: Kate Wallis, a popular girl loved by everyone, and shy and introverted Jeanette Turner. In 1993 Kate disappears at the hands of the new vice principal Martin Harris, and Jeanette takes over what was her life. Kate is found alive a year later and accuses Jeanette of witnessing her kidnapping without saying anything about her, making her the most despised person in America. Through various temporal jumps the story is reconstructed through the families, friendships and relationships of the two girls, alternating the points of view between the two of them.
