Nicholas Brody, a Marine sergeant believed missing in action in the Iraq War, is released after eight years in captivity. Once he returns home, the entire nation immediately elects him as a war hero. Carrie Mathison, a CIA analyst, is the only one who believes that in reality he poses a serious threat to the country: in fact, she identifies in Brody an unknown American prisoner of war who converted to Islam and entered the service of al-Qaeda. Realizing the difficulties of proving his thesis and convincing his superiors to put Sergeant Carrie under surveillance, he begins to secretly investigate the figure of Nicholas Brody, to prevent another terrorist attack on American soil.

Una volta ritornato a casa, l'intera nazione lo elegge immediatamente a eroe di guerra. Carrie Mathison, un'analista della CIA, è l'unica a credere che in realtà egli rappresenti una seria minaccia per il Paese: identifica infatti in Brody uno sconosciuto prigioniero di guerra americano convertitosi all'Islam e passato al servizio di al-Qaida. Rendendosi conto delle difficoltà di provare la sua tesi e di convincere i suoi superiori a mettere sotto sorveglianza il sergente Carrie inizia a indagare segretamente sulla figura di Nicholas Brody, per prevenire un altro attacco terroristico sul suolo americano.
