The series takes place in Munich in 1900. The power comes from the breweries, the city's largest employers, as well as the Oktoberfest owners who are in their favor and hold the Oktoberfest license. Curt Prank is a major Franconian brewery looking to expand at Oktoberfest. However, as a non-resident, he does not receive a liquor license, nor is he allowed to serve his Franconian beer. By means of extortion, bribery and contract killings, Prank manages to steal five adjacent plots of land on which he wants to build his beer castle. The plan brings Munich's traditional small breweries such as the Hoflinger family's Deibel Bräu to the brink of existence and triggers a tough and bloody struggle for survival.
