The series is the prequel to the spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and is set five years before the events of the film. The protagonist is Cassian Andor, a rebel spy and the story takes place during the years of the formation of the Rebel Alliance to counter the power of the Galactic Empire.
