Traveling Companions covers the lives of five main characters as they navigate major historical events: the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the era of hedonism and drug abuse of the 1970s, and the devastating AIDS crisis of the 1980s. In particular, space is given to the clandestine love story that Hawkins Fuller (played by Matt Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (played by Jonathan Bailey) undertake: addressing the genesis of a relationship born in the midst of McCarthyism and the repression of all those who are considered subversive (like anyone who is not heterosexual), and continuing throughout the difficult decades that followed.
