Thirty years have passed since Dr. Sam Beckett disappeared in the Quantum Leap accelerator. The Quantum Leap project has been restarted with a new team trying to solve the problems left unsolved by Beckett and his machine. For unknown reasons, Dr. Ben Song, the physicist leading the new project, uploaded new program code into the project's systems and used the updated accelerator to go back in time. He loses himself in the past just as Beckett did, living other people's lives and changing history in the hope of returning to the present. Addison Augustine, the project's assistant, who is also Ben's girlfriend, serves as a liaison to the project, appearing to him as a hologram that only he can see and hear, just as she had done for Beckett Al Calavicci, the original project observer.
