Tom Ripley is a young American with unscrupulous ingenuity, who moves to Italy with the task of persuading the rich heir Dickie Greenleaf, there with his partner Marge Sherwood, to return to the United States. His ability to lie, cheat and assume other people's identities leads him down a dark path of deception and crime as he tries to fit into the bohemian life of 1950s Italy, weaving an increasingly complex web of relationships and falsehoods.
