Mickey Bolitar, a promising young basketball player, has just returned to the United States with his father and mother when the three suffer a car accident that kills his father and sends his mother to the hospital. Mickey, who relives the moments of the accident in which a paramedic takes away his father in his last moments of life, is shocked to the point that he no longer wants to play basketball, convinced that he is the cause of that accident. He lives with his aunt Shira, his father's sister, who tries to look after him as best as he can despite him never wanting children. Her mother, in good health, is currently hospitalized in a clinic with post-traumatic stress disorder. On the first day of school, Mickey meets Ashley Kent, a beautiful girl who has also just transferred. The two bond immediately, so much so that they arrange to meet that afternoon in a bar but Ashley doesn't show up and doesn't respond to her messages. Suspicious, Mickey starts asking questions the next day and discovers that Ashley has mysteriously dropped out of school. Returning home, he enters the garden of a strange house that caught his attention. An elderly lady comes out of the house and calls him by name, revealing that his father is still alive. Eager to understand who that woman is and why she said that phrase, he will get help in his search for her from his friends Spoon and Ema.

Tornando a casa, entra nel giardino di una strana casa che ha attirato la sua attenzione. Dall'abitazione esce una signora anziana che lo chiama per nome, rivelandogli che suo padre è ancora vivo. Desideroso di capire chi sia quella donna e del perché abbia detto quella frase, si farà aiutare nella sua ricerca dai suoi amici Spoon e Ema.
