Abby Arcane returns home to Marais, Louisiana to seek a cure for a very strange epidemic spreading from the swamps, where she meets a disgraced scientist, Alec Holland, with whom she develops a close bond. Abby and Alec begin to understand that this is not just a virus. After Holland is tragically dead, Abby discovers the mysteries of the swamp and that Holland may still be alive, because a mysterious creature claims to be him.
