Apollo Kagwa is a used book dealer in New York. Raised by his mother alone after his father's abandonment, he recently married Emmy Valentine and is expecting a child with her. However, after the baby is born, Emmy begins to show what appear to be symptoms of severe postpartum depression, until the day that Emmy apparently kills her baby by pouring a pot of boiling water on it, then disappears into the Nothing. At first shocked, Apollo gradually realizes that there is something unnatural in the tragedy that has struck him and begins a surreal journey to try to discover the truth and find his wife and son.
