Alina Starkov is a teenage orphan from the Kingdom of Ravka. She grew up with Malyen (aka "Mal") Oretsev in an orphanage in Keramzin, run by an anonymous wealthy patron. At the beginning of the story, the two friends march to the Unsea (also known as "Faglia"), a perpetually dark and barren strip of land that separates most of Ravka from the sea. The crossing is dangerous because the Unmare is full of monsters called Volcra. At the start of their voyage, the Volcra attack Mal and Alina's battalion and, to save Mal from the monsters, Alina displays extraordinary talent, a power that is uniquely possessed by the Grisha. The Grisha are people with the ability to manipulate the elements, powers that they use and train as weapons. They are able, for example, to call fire, summon the wind, stop hearts. Alina can evoke light, more precisely the light of the sun.

Alina Starkov è un'orfana adolescente, cittadina del Regno di Ravka. È cresciuta insieme a Malyen (detto anche "Mal") Oretsev in un orfanotrofio a Keramzin, mantenuto da un ricco mecenate anonimo. All'inizio della storia i due amici marciano verso il Nonmare (noto anche come "Faglia"), una striscia di terra perennemente oscura e sterile che separa la maggior parte di Ravka dal mare. La traversata è pericolosa perché il Nonmare è pieno di mostri chiamati Volcra. All'inizio della loro traversata, i Volcra attaccano il battaglione di Mal e Alina e, per salvare Mal dai mostri, Alina mostra uno straordinario talento, un potere che è in possesso unicamente dei Grisha. I Grisha sono persone con la capacità di manipolare gli elementi, poteri che usano e allenano come armi. Sono in grado, ad esempio, di chiamare il fuoco, evocare il vento, fermare i cuori.
