Ten years before the events of the series, a pandemic known as the Great Collapse nearly exterminated the human race and resulted in the birth of hybrid children, part human and part animal. Not knowing if these children are a consequence of the pandemic, many humans fear them and hunt them down. After many years of hiding in a forest with his father, a half-deer baby, Gus, befriends a wanderer named Jepperd. Together, the two embark on an adventure in search of Gus's origins and Jepperd's past. On their path they will encounter allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns that the world outside the forest is far more complex and dangerous than he thought.
