The series begins in a girls' orphanage where Beth meets Jolene, a lively and friendly girl a few years older than Beth; Helen Deardorff, the woman who runs the orphanage; and Mr. Shaibel, the keeper of the orphanage, giving Beth her first chess lessons. After being adopted and in her new home, Beth decides to start participating in chess tournaments. She wins many games by being noticed by others and develops friendships with several people, including Harry Beltik, Benny Watts and Townes. Along the way, as she continues to win games and becomes more famous, she also becomes more addicted to drugs and alcohol, and begins to lose control of her life.
