A very powerful virus similar to that of the flu created in the laboratory and escaped from the control of the army expands one day in the summer air of a small town in Maine. There is no cure for this virus and it appears humanity is on the verge of extinction. But a small group of people are immune to the virus. The first to show signs of survival is Stu, a Texan, who hears the call of an elderly black seer, Abigail Freemantle, known as Mother Abigail. On his way to Mother Abigail's home, Stu will meet other survivors who, like him, have heard the call of the seer and come to her to understand the meaning of her message. Together, the survivors will unite to defeat the forces of evil led by Randall Flagg, an incarnation of the Devil.
