Dan Chase is a former CIA agent, widower and Vietnam veteran. Chase has been retired to the countryside in Vermont for about thirty years. He has two rottweilers, apparently harmless but perfectly trained to attack. He has a daughter, with whom he is in contact only by telephone. After killing an intruder who breaks into his house, and from whom he manages to save himself thanks to the CIA training and the collaboration of the rottweilers, Chase is forced to hide and go into hiding; he rents a room from Zoe McDonald, who becomes his forced companion while he is on the run. FBI Deputy Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper, an old comrade of Chase, is called to arrest Chase because of their complicated past and a terrible event that occurred during the Soviet-Afghan war. Alongside Harper are his protégés: FBI agent Angela Adams, CIA officer Raymond Waters, and Julian Carson, a hitman hired by Harper to kill Chase.
